Analyzes a variety ofspecifications, lays out metal stock, sets up and operates machine tools, andfits and assembles parts to fabricate or repair cutting tools, jigs, fixtures,gauges or machinists' hand tools, applying knowledge of tool design, shopmathematics, metal properties and layout, machining, and assembly procedures:Studies specifications, such as blueprints, sketches or tool description, andplans sequence of operations. Measures, marks, and scribes metal stock tolayout work pieces for machining. Sets up and operates machine tools, such aslathe, milling, machine, shaper, and grinder to machine parts tospecifications, and verifies conformance of machined parts to specifications.Positions and secures parts on surface plate or worktables, using devices suchas vises, V-blocks and angle plates. Fits and assembles parts into assembliesor mechanisms, using hand tools; verifies dimensions and alignment, usingmeasuring instruments such as micrometers, height gauges, and gauge blocks.Examines standard tools and modifies tools as required. Develops specificationsfrom general description and draws or sketches tool to be fabricated, usingdrafting tools or computer and software programs. Heat treats tools or parts.May operate machine tool controls on equipment and automated machinery to testfor malfunctions and to verify repair. May diagnose and replace faultymechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic components of machines and equipment.Works cross-functionally to make repairs within one's capability.
